The Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden popularly known as Guwahati Zoo is the largest of its kind in the North East region. The zoo is located within the Hengrabari Reserved Forest at Guwahati, India. The zoo is home to about 895 animals, birds and reptiles representing almost 113 species of animals and birds from around the World. The Assam State Zoo also added a Museum and in the year 1982 a Botanical Garden and so Assam State Zoo became The Assam State Zoo Cum Botanical Garden.

The Guwahati Zoo also known as the Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden is one of the major tourist spots in Assam. The Assam State Zoo is located in the Hengrabari Reserve Forest in capital city Guwahati in Assam. The zoo occupies an area of 130 hectares and the botanical garden in the zoo is spread across over an area of 82 hectares. 

The zoo comprises a unique diversity of varied flora and fauna species preserved in it. The Guwahati Zoo was established in the year 1957 and was inaugurated and opened to public for the first time in the year 1958. During the first opening time, the Guwahati zoo had 42 and 236 species of animals and birds respectively. vegetation of the Assam State Zoo is a mixture of tropical moist deciduous forest and semi evergreen forests. The physical features of the zoo are formed with hilly terrain with a plateau on the middle and slopes alongside the plateau. One can also see bamboo forests with teak plantation and shrubs inside the zoo.
