The Umananda temple, located on the Peacock Island, is one of the important temples of Guwahati. Situated in the middle of River Brahmaputra, this temple is dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva. During the festival of Shivratri, every year, a large number of devotees visit this temple.

The Umananda temple is located on a small island on the Brahmaputra river. The island is called Peacock Island and perhaps is the smallest river island in the world. To visit this place you will need to take a ferry ride from the banks. There is a small hill on the island sheltering the temple namely, Bhasmacala. In 1694 A.D., the temple was constructed by Bar Phukan Garhganya Handique under orders from King Gadadhar Singh of the Tai-Ahom dynasty.
Dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva, Umananda is the most revered temple in the entire state and entices tourists from far and wide to come and visit it. During the occasion of Shivratri, every year, thousands of worshipers come to this part of the state to seek the blessings of the Lord. The temple is flocked by thousands of devotees during Shiva Chaturdashi. Several devotees also pay visit to the temple from far flung areas to offer prayer to lord Shiva during Shivratri festival celebrated here with much fanfare.
