The river island was formed due to the course change by the mighty Brahmaputra and its tributaries, especially the Lohit. Majuli has an area of 1,250 sq kms, but with erosion the river island lost land and the present area is 421.65 sq kms in 2001. Majuli is accessible by ferries that run from the city of Jorhat. The river island is the seat of Assamese neo-Vaishnavite culture. 

The popular Hindu God Krishna is supposed to play here with his friends.Majuli provides a richness of natural beauty and picturesque views. Stretched amidst the waters of the Brahmaputra, the picturesque island provides a haven for nature lovers. The serene atmosphere of the island adds more to the beauty. 

The home of migratory birds, the land of the Satras, Majuli itself is a tourist hotspot. The tourist places of Majuli include the neo-Vaishnavite Satras, migratory birds, pottery making, mask making, Bathow Puja of the Sonowal Kacharis, Paalnaam festival in winter-end and the Ali-ai-ligang festival in Feb-March. One can also see the nature beauty and the picturesque sunset that looms in the evening at the horizon.

Long Description:

Majuli is the largest river island in India. It is situated in the mighty Brahmaputra in Assam state. Majuli is the source of neo-Vaishnavite culture propagated by Assamese saint Srimanta Sankardeva and his disciple Madhabdeva during the 15th century. The island has many Satras and monasteries which promote the teachings of the saint and his disciple. 

Garamurh Satra was founded by Lakshmikantadeva. There are ancient weapons known as ‘Bartop’ or cannons preserved in this Satra. Auniati Satra was founded by Niranjan Pthakdeva. This Satra is famous for the ‘Paalnaam; and Apsara dances which takes place here. There are ancient Assamese artifacts, utensils, jewelry and handicrafts preserved here.

Kamalabari Satra was found by Bedulapadma Ata. It is the center of art, literature, culture ad classical studies in the island. Benegenaati Satra is a home of antiques of cultural and historical importance. It is an advanced canter for performing arts. Muraridev, the grandson of Sankardeva’s stepmother was the founder of this Satra.

Shamaguri Satra is famous for mask making in India. The Satras are a treasure trove of Satriya Dances, Borgeet, Paalnaam, Ozapali, Notua dance and a host of other cultural traditions propagated by Srimanta Sankardeva.During the end of autumn, traditional Raasleela is enacted with pomp and grandeur. 

Scenary of Mauji has typical landscape at Majuli dotted with small lakes and cattle feeding on grasslands.A ferry arriving at Kamalabari Ghat, on Majuli Island. There are several houses type including typical house made of mud and bamboo at Majuli, near by Mauji a house with tall legs like these is common in Majuli. It keeps them dry during flood. In mauji Crops destroyed by floods are a common sight in Majuli. Floods are the biggest dilemma here. Majuli is a wetland and is a hotspot for different species of flora and fauna. The island is a home to rare species of migratory birds that come flocking every year.
