Ekambareswarar Temple
Short Overview:
Ekambareswarar temple is one of the largest temples in this sacred city of Tamil Nadu. The temple is devoted to Lord Shiva and is considered as one of the oldest Shiva Temples in India. It is believed that the Ekambareswarar Temple was built before 600 A.D by Paranthaka Chola. Though in the beginning the temple was nothing but a small fane, but over the years, it grew to be one of the largest temples, with gopurams (tower) tanks, shrines and mandapans. This ancient temple is famous for its Kubera sculpture showing the Lord of Wealth on His Fish vehicle.
Long Overview:
The history of the Ekambareswarar Temple of kanchipuram says that it was built by paranthaka chola a king of chola dynasty even before 600 A.D. The stone wall that encircled the temple was built by the Vijaynagar Empire in the 16th century A.D. Sun rays fall on the Lord on 19, 20 and 21 in the month of Panguni (March-April). There are 10 pillars in the inner corridor (prakara) of the temple producing 10 different musical sounds if tapped with a dry sandal stick.
The Ekambareswarar Temple is spread over a large area of about 12.14 hectares. The temple has a number of shrines, gopurams, tanks and mandapans that together make it one of the largest temples in Kanchipuram. The gopuram at the entrance of the Ekambareswarar Temple is as high as 188 feet. There are about ten storey’s of complex sculptures, which is installed in 12 spots in the temple representing the 12 zodiac signs, when viewed from atop it is said that the idols combined together looks like OHM letter shape wich is one of the attraction. People throng the temple to worship Kubera for wealth. According to Vedic scholars from Tiruvannamalai, there is no temple in the country has such Kubera installations.
