Short Overview:


The Koodal Alagar Temple in Madurai is an ancient temple which is one among the 108 Vishnavaite shrine located at a distance of about 2km to the west of the city. The Koodal Alagar Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, an important God of the Hindu pantheon. There are a total of 108 Divya Desam or Vaishnavite shrines in the country. But in only two of these shrines can one witness Lord Vishnu in all three postures – standing, sitting and reclining. The Koodal Alagar Temple is one of those two temples to have this unique feature. The Koodal Azhagar temples are the best manifestations of its unique cultural heritage.

Long Description:

The Koodal alagar temple is one of the ancient temples of Madurai. The central deity of this temple is Vishnu, who is believed to have resided here. It is thus one of the 108 Divya Desams (or holy abodes) of the deity and hence sees a large number of devotees offer their prayers here. Like most temples here, the Vimana over the main shrine has beautiful scenes intricately carved over it in different, colourful shades. From total 108 Divya Desam or Vaishnavite shrines in the country, only two of these shrines can one witness Lord Vishnu in all three postures – standing, sitting and reclining. The Koodal Alagar Temple is one of those two temples to have this unique feature. The temple is built in three levels, which each level flaunting a different pose of Lord Vishnu. The first level as Lord Vishnu as Alagar (in a seated position), the second has him in his reclining avatar as Shri Ranganatha and the top most level has him standing as Sri Surya Narayana Perumal. . It is rare to see Attanga Vimana in temples, which adds to the uniqueness of the Sri Koodal alagar temple.
