Short Overview:

Dibru Saikhowa National Park is one of the 19 (nineteen) biodiversity hot spots in the world. It mainly consists of semi wet evergreen forests, tropical moist deciduous forest, bamboo, cane brakes and grasslands. Situated in the flood plains of Brahmaputra. Dibru-Saikhowa is a safe haven for many extremely rare and endangered species of wildlife, including over 300 species of avifauna both endangered and migratory, as well as various species of shrubs, herbs and rare medicinal plants.it is one of the 14 Biosphere Reserves of India.  

The vegetation and forest types of the area can broadly be categorized as tropical evergreen and semi evergreen forests, tropical moist deciduous forest, swamps and marshes and grasslands.

Long Overview:

Dibru-Saikhowa is a cluster of islands on the confluence of the river Dibru and the Brahmaputra in the extreme east of Assam. Spread over a core area of 340 sq. km, Though the park was primarily meant for the conservation of White winged wood duck in its natural habitat, it is also the famous for its bright colored wild horses known as Feral Horses. Some rare and endangered animals of this sanctuary are Hoolock gibbon, capped langur, slow loris, water buffalo, tiger, elephant, gangetic river dolphin etc. 

Bird life consists of Spot billed pelican, White bellied heron, Pallah's fishing eagle, Pale capped pigeon, Swamp francolin etc. and migratory birds like Geyleg goose, Brahmini duck, Bar-headed goose, pelican, Black stork etc.his ecosystem is home to a wide range of animals including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, butterflies and insects. 


The Park hosts 500 plus species of birds, 30 plus species of mammals, 43 species of reptiles, more than 100 species of butterflies  and 680 species of plants. 12 species of mammals recorded in the Park are listed in the Schedule-I of the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.  Among them are the tiger, elephant, Asiatic wild buffalo, hoolock gibbon, capped langur and slow loris. The Park is the last critical refuge of many endangered species of birds like the White-Winged Wood Duck, Bengal Florican, White Rumped Vulture, Black Breasted  Parrotbill, Marsh Babbler and Jerdon’s Babbler.  25% threatened birds of India have been recorded in Dibru-Saikhowa. Another unique feature is the presence of feral horses in this park.
