Short Overview:




The Varadaraja Perumal Temple, built by the Cholas in the 11th century, is a connoisseur’s delight. Vijayanagara rulers added the 180- foot high eastern superman and a western gourmet of matching the grandeur in the 16th century. There are a number of temples dedicated to Lord Varadaraja located near the Palar. The been known among them is the Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple in Kanchipuram. The Kalyana Varadaraja Perumal temple in the village of Attur is also by this river and the Kamala Varadaraja Perumal temple at Arasar Kovil, is picturesquely situated close to the River Palar.

Long Overview:


Varadaraja Perumal temple is recognized as Hastigiri and it was originally known as Attiyuran. Attiyuuran is a famous Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu located in the holy city of Kanchipuram. It is one of the "Divya Desams" temple, the 108 temples of Lord Vishnu believed to have been visited by the 12 poet saints or Alwars. Varadaraja Temple is situated on the west of Gandhi Road, which is off Tyagraja Street. 

The name Hastigiri is applied in the association of Gajendra moksham and from the myth that Indra's elephant Airavatam , in the form of a hill bears the image of Lord Vishnu.  The temple is carved within a hillock and the first shrine you see is that of Narasimha or Azhagiya Singar seated in a yogic posture. The main deity Devaraja Perumal (‘king among gods’), also known as Varadaraja Perumal (‘bestower of benedictions’)  There are around 18 temples of Lord Vishnu from which Shridevaraj Swami is a major temple out of these 18 temples, it is also known as Varadaraja Swami temple. 

It is said that Lord Narayana was also worshipped as Vardaraja and Devaraja. The Varadaraja temple has a magnificent hall of 100 pillars which adds to the attraction. Near Varadaraja temple there are few more temples like Kamakshi Amma Temple, Ekambarnath Temple, Kumarkottan Temple, and Kailashnath Temple.
