Sri Ulagalanda Perumal Temple
Short Overview:
Ulagalanda Perumal Temple, situated very near to the Kanchipuram, is one of the most important temples of Kanchipuram, the city of thousand temples. The temple is famous for the gigantic image of the main deity of ulagalanda perumal an incarnation of lord Vishnu. Arvaanam is one of the 108 Divyadesas of Perumal. Perumal appears majestically blessing the devotees with his right leg pressed on the ground with the left up; this is one of the three temples within one temple ranking among the Divyadesas.
Long Overview:
The temple has an area of about 60,000 square feet and has a three tiered rajagopuram (main towers). The temple houses 4 divya desams on it own - they are Thirukkarvaanam, Thirukaaragam, Thiruooragam and Thiruneeragam. The temple is valued by the verses of Tirumangai Alvar and Thirumazhisai Aazhwar. Thaayar of the temple is Amudhavalli (Amirthavalli) and Utsavaar of the temple is Sri Loganathan.
Deity is known as Thiru Vikraman, Ulagalantha Perumal in a Standing Posture West Facing while Goddess is Amutha Valli. Within this massive temple of Ulagalanda Perumal are four other smaller Vishnu shrines, dedicated to Karakathan, Ooorakathan, Neerakathan and Karvanathan. Legend Ulagalanda Perumal is the fifth incarnation of Lord Vishnu (known as Vamana Avataar). Lord Perumal stands majestically facing north blessing His devotees. Vimana above the sanctum is of Pushkala design. It is believed that the Mother Parvathi had the darshan of Lord in this temple. Vaikunda Ekadasi in Tamil Margazhi covering December-January is grandly celebrated in the temple. The temple has 15 inscriptions from various dynasties like Pallavas, Cholas and Sambuvarayars in addition there are three Divyadesas within this temple Tiru Ooragam, Tiru Neeragam and Tiru Karakam.
