Birla Planetarium, in Kotturpuram suburbs of Chennai city features a modern fully computerized planetarium. This modern planetarium is housed in a hemispherical theatre. The Tamilnadu or the Periyar Science and Technology Centre as it is popularly known, encompasses a Science Centre and a Planetarium enables the visiting public to understand scientific and technological inventions through working models. The Solar System, Cycle of Stars, Sky and Seasons, Comets, Man on the Moon - exciting celestial topics envelop one and all in a unique imbibing process. The place, since its inception is a frequently visited place by tourists, students, environmentalists and people inclined to astronomy.

The planetarium of Kotturpuram suburbs of Chennai city is named after B.M Birla as it was built in the memory of the leading industrialist and visionary of India, B.M. Birla. The Birla Planetarium is a fully computerized planetarium featuring an audio, video sojourn of the cosmic space. You hold your breath as the cosmic world revolves around you – twinkling stars, shooting meteoroids, the rotating solar system and the undulating contours of the red planet, Mars. The spectacular show goes on, with the city of Chennai radiantly resplendent against the night sky.

An ethereal experience that almost makes you feel one with the sparkling universe. The planetarium started as a project in the year 1988 and the establishment responsible for its inception was the famous Periyar Science and Technology Centre of Chennai. An entirely novel concept is being used to carry the message of science to the remotest areas - Science on Wheel - a mobile science exhibition. The planetarium is fully computerized consisting with a comfortable 236 nos of seating capacity at any given time. What’s more, the planetarium plays home to the most modern, sophisticated and versatile GM II projector. Eight galleries on themes of Physical Science, Transport, Electronics & Communication, Energy, Materials Science, Life Science, Innovation, International Dolls and Children, with over 500 exhibits, make the visit to the Centre, a thoroughly enjoyable and enlightening experience.  Galleries display exhibits of the interactive variety.
