Kalakshetra is a cultural
academy for preservation of traditional values in Indian art, especially in the
field of classical dance, music and fine arts, founded in 1936 by Smt.Rukmini
Devi. Kalakshetra or today also known as
'Temple of Art' is located in Thiruvanmiyur, outside Elliot's beach in south
Chennai. The School is set
in a gigantic 40 hectare (i.e 99acres) campus, where classical music and dance
are taught according to the traditional methods by which a guru imparts
knowledge to a small group of students. At the end of each year, a festival is
held and performances are staged in an auditorium designed like a Koottambulam,
the traditional theatre. Here you can explore the academy's various
divisions like the Rukmini Devi College of Fine Arts, Rukmini Devi Museum and
Craft Education and Research Centre.
