Jambukeshwara temple is devoted to Shiva, Parvati and the medium of water. Jambukeshwara Temple is 7km away from Trichy junction and less than 1km from Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple. This is a famous Shiva temple and one of the five Pancha bootha kshetras (five elements namely water, earth, air, fire and ether). The temple of Jambukeswara is named after an elephant that local legend says worshiped Lord Shiva here. This temple is said to have been built in the 1st century BC and has been patronized by the Chola, Pandya, Hoysala and the Madurai Naik kings. Legend says that the linga was created by Shiva´s consort Parvati, and in homage to her.

Jambukeshwara temple is one of the ancient temples dedicated to Shiva (Jambukeswara) are one of the foremost Saivite shrines in Tamilnadu. Situated in the Srirangam island near Tiruchirappalli near one of the holiest of Vaishnavite shrines Tiruvarangam. This large temple celebrates Shiva as Jambukeswara. Lord Shiva in Lingam form, is depicted sitting under a Jambu tree. Therefore the lingam came to call at the Jambulingam. This temple is said to have been built in the 1st century BC and has been patronized by the Chola, Pandya, Hoysala and the Madurai Naik kings. The temple was built by the Chola King Ko Chenkannan and it is one of the Pancha bhoota Sthalams (signifying the 5 natural elements such as water, earth, air, fire and ether) and represents water ('Neer'). Hence this temple is also referred as 'Appu Sthalam' and the ShivaLingam here is called as 'Appu Linga. This vast temple has five prakarams with massive walls and lofty towers. The second and third prakarams date back to the thirteenth century. It is one of the 275 paadal petra Sthalams where all of the four most revered Nayanars have sung glories of the deity in this temple.
