Sri Rangam (formerly Vellithirumutha gramam) is an island and a part of the city it of Tiruchirapalli. It is bound by the Kaveri River on one side and the Kaveri distributary Kollidam on the other side. Sri Rangam is home to a significant population of Srivaishnavites followers of Lord Vishnu. The temple complex is the biggest functioning Hindu temple in the world as it covers an area of about 631,000 sq m with a perimeter of 4km (10,710 sq ft). The complex is composed of 7 concentric walled sections and 21 magnificent towers or gopuram. The gopuram of the temple is called the Rajagopuram and is 236 feet (72m) tall, is the tallest in Asia.

The Sri Rangam temple of Sri Raganatha Swami is blessing in three different islands of the holy river Kaveri. It flows from Karnataka to Tamilnadu. The first island is Sriranga Patinam and it is called Aathirnagam (Origin of Rangam), located in Mysore (125km distances from Bangalore to Mysore route). The second island is Sivanasha Samuthiram and it is called Mathiyarnagam (Middle of Rangam), situated 70km distances from Srirangapatinam. The third island is Thiru navalantheevu and it is called Srirangam and also called Antharngam (last part of Rangam - meaning of heaven) is situated in Trichirappalli district. Sriranagm temple is 7km away from the Trichirappalli and it consists of 39 pavilions, 50 shrines, a hall of a thousand pillars and several small water bodies inside. The temple complex is the biggest functioning Hindu temple in the world as it covers an area of about 631,000 sq m (6,790,000 sq ft) with a perimeter of 4km (10,710 sq ft). The complex is composed of 7 concentric walled sections and 21 magnificent towers or gopuram. The gopuram of the temple is called the Rajagopuram and is 236 feet (72m) tall, is the tallest in Asia. The Srirangam temple complex follows the Dravidian style of architecture. This temple is glorified in the Divya prabandha, the early Tamil literature canon of the Alvar saints from the 6th to 9th century AD. This ancient temple is a point of convergence of Hindu pilgrimage where people from all over the Indian come to offer their prayers and to wash away the committed sins by diving into the holy pool or spring called chandar pushkarani located in the temple itself.
