Bharathiyar Illam is the house in Chennai where Subramanya Bharthi, one of the greatest of the Tamil Poets spent the last few years of his creative life. It is surely ace of enormous heritage , since it belonged to a poet of such a high order, someone who was capable of writing beautiful verses even at the age of seven. For those interested in the lives of the greatest of Indian poets, the Bharathiyar Illam in Triplicane is a must visit while on tours to Tamil Nadu. The Bharatiyar Illam in Chennai was taken over by the government and renovated by the Tamil Nadu Government in 1993. The house takes us back to the life and times of Mahakavi Bharathi. Photographs of Bharathiyar, his family, and his friends are displayed here. His hand written verses are framed and displayed. There is also a letter from Mahatma Gandhi (in Tamil) to mark the occasion of the opening of the Bharathiyar Mani Mandapam in Ettayapuram, in 1947.   Bharathiyar's letters to his friend Nellaiappar are also displayed.
